The Best 10 Features of the Canon C700 4.5K Camera
The Canon EOS C-Series cameras have become an industry standard and arguably began the rise of mid-size mid-price cameras we've seen over the past few years. So, in many ways, the Canon C700 seems a bit out of left field. It's not just the different shape or the price ($28k, gulp!), but the features are sort of...standard? Looking over the specs it feels a bit like...yes, this is what a modern, professional camera should include! The Canon C700 features are totally solid, but nothing here is going to blow ARRI or Sony out of the water.
That being said, the Canon C700 is a beautiful camera. And not every camera need to be revolutionary! A camera is a tool - one that's only as good as the person behind it - and the C700 is a dependable tool for an experienced craftsman. We had a chance to check it out at Zacuto HQ and the camera is incredibly user-friendly, easy to accessorize, and most importantly - the images are stunning.
So, to give this camera it's due, we've put together a list of our favorite features.
4.5K CMOS sensor with 15 stops of dynamic range.
A built in cheese plate with both 3/8 16 and 1/4 20 threaded holes to attach accessories like our Z-Rail and Axis Mini EVF Mount, or an articulating arm.
The cheeseplate gives you so many more options when building a rig. We love it!
Codex CDX-36150. This is optional, but with it you can record uncompressed 10-bit or 12-bit 4K RAW up to 120 fps, 2K RAW up to 240 fps, or ProRes 4K up to 60 fps.
Two modes of internal recording: Canon XF-AVC and Apple ProRes (yay!) Both record to internal CFast Media.
Supports Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3 Gamma. Canon Log helps you reproduce the entire CMOS image sensor tonal range in post. You get higher dynamic range, more highlight and shadow retention, and more flexibility in grading.
Supports Rec. 2020, which is the UHDTV display color space.
Dual Pixel Focus Guide, made possible by Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DAF) technology. Basically, there is a rectangle in the center of your EVF or monitor that turns green when the subject is in focus. Seems simple, but super helpful when racking focus.
Internal ND Filters save a lot of time on set and give you more options with minimal extra fuss.
Slow and Fast Motion Recording. The fastest frames rates of all the Canon C-Series cameras so far. 4K 60P plus 2K recording up to 120 frame per second and a crop 2K mode featuring up to 240 frames per second.
A classic camera shape and size that's just as easy to adapt to your studio workflow and accessories as to your run'n'gun location shoot days. Finally!
